  The GreenSTART Fair

Showcasing GreenSTART Projects The Town of Atherton will host the GreenSTART Fair on May 4th, 2008 at Holbrook-Palmer Park from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. There will be fun, entertainment, food and music for all to enjoy! The centerpiece of the event, however, will be the students who are showing artistic displays about their GreenSTART environmental projects to the community and answering questions. Each participating student team will have a table and be present to describe their project, how they plan to execute their project and what they hope to achieve. Members of the community will have a chance to evaluate students' presentations, ask questions and vote on the projects that they like. Residents must be registered to vote! (New Prize: Every resident who is pre-registered prior to the Fair will receive a free copy of the 2008 GreenZebra Savings Guide! To learn how you can participate and win a free GreenZebra Savings Guide, go to the GreenSTART Home Page.)

Also featured at the fair . . . .

  • Music by the fabulous Banana Slus String Band from 3:30 until 4:30, following the student project presentations.
  • "Closed-Loop" Community Voting where participating residents vote to help us select winning projects and GreenSTART project funding (for more information on this, please see our Resident page).
  • Green Seedling Plant Sale hosted by the Encinal Green Thumb Club, a group of 3rd to 5th graders who meet during lunch to work on tending their garden, with funds raised going to support new school gardens and programs.
  • Freecycle Exchange where people give what they don't need and get what they do need! It's about reuse and keeping items out of the landfill. You are welcome to bring good, clean items that you don't want any more (but which have a long life left in them) and to pick out items that you can use. All item exchanges are free. Plus, learn more about how you can participate in freecycle online! Drop off only starting at 10:00 am! Special collection of kids books will be donated to Selby School!
  • Organic, home-made snacks and treats will be available for purchase and funds raised will go to support GreenSTART!
  • Supervised fun and games for the little ones, so you can spend time viewing the projects, talking with students and voting for your favorite projects!
  • Herbal-infused Massages by Christina Farber for all to enjoy a moment of massage relief (with special attention to runners who participated in the Menlo-Atherton Big Bear Run that morning!)
  • E-Waste Collection where you can drop off your electronic waste and help the town earn credits towards landfill diversion
  • WoodFirst Demonstration of Mobile Sawmill and the building of a bench for the park from milled lumber
  • Additional Exhibits from Cobalt Power Systems, Harrell Remodeling, Allied Waste, Acterra, GreenZebra and Emerson Environmental to help homeowners get green at home.
  • Announcement of the winning student projects (estimated for 4:45 pm, immediately after the music) with final award presentations to be made at the following Atherton City Council meeting.
