Information Links & Documents

We have brought together some of what we think are the most important links to authoritative sources of information about the current thinking about the state of our environment. This is by no means an exhaustive listing but it is a good start, especially for those who are trying to learn more about why addressing the issue of our carbon emissions now is critical to us all. If you would like to recommend other sites for this list, please let us know! Thanks!

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: The world's authoritative source for scientific confirmation of the "unequivocal" determination that man's activities has and continues to have a detrimental impact on global climate. The IPCC report is a must read for climate change awareness.

Local Expert: Stephen Schneider: A Stanford professor, MacArthur Fellow and one of the lead authors on the IPCC reports, has committed decades to research on and writing about climate change. He has referenced many other sources as well on his web site.

San Mateo County's RecycleWorks: A useful site for learning more about environmental goings on in San Mateo County.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission: this powerful commission is responsible for all water, wastewater collection, and power in the SF bay area. Their web site has all kinds of interesting information.

California Integrated Waste Management Board: the State agency designated to oversee, manage and track California's 92 million tons of waste generated each year. Currently moving towards a Zero Waste California.

South Bayside Waste management Authority: SBWMA is a joint powers authority for twelve member agencies in San Mateo County to manage the waste-related services in conformance with California's AB 939 (requiring 50% diversion rate), recommend and implement policies and continually improve the area's recycling and waste-reduction programs.

Allied Waste: serves the communities of Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Foster City, Redwood City, San Carlos, Fair Oaks, Unincorporated areas of San Mateo County, Menlo Park, and West Bay Sanitary District with waste collection, recycling, transportation, disposal and related services. If you are not sure about your garbage or recycling service, this is the place to go. Here is Allied Waste's Residential Waste Prevention suggestions.

The Watershed Project: The US Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air quality as one of the top 5 environmental risks, and the use of conventional cleaning supplies is partially to blame. Many cleaning products are used in Bay Area schools and are potentially dangerous to students, teachers, and the maintenance staff who use them. Read this primer on toxic cleaning products to learn which high-risk ingredients can cause the most harm, and find out how you can make your school a less toxic workplace.
