Therefore, the best investment they can make is to maintain their focus on what they do best—and to put aside the big "high stakes" deliberations about spending and investing their earnings for when they are no longer "in the game."

This doesn't mean that the professional athlete shouldn't have their earnings wisely invested: they should—in a conservatively managed, long-term portfolio that optimally offsets taxable losses against income and serves to preserve assets. This portfolio should be managed by a trusted professional and, except for a budgeted amount for living expenses, should be considered "off-limits." This allows the professional to provide a firm justification for not taking up other business distractions while they are focused on their sport. This will be the primarily defense against what is inevitably a very long line of people offering opportunities to help the athlete make a wide array of interesting (mostly unwise) investments. We urge you to resist these early advances and to wait until such time as you have a better appreciation for your real "net worth" and when they will not be a distraction to your primary focus!
